Viber Proxy Setting Up the Built-In Proxy Server

Viber works on

  • Android
  • iOS
  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Linux

Key facts

  • Where the setting is

Phone: More > Settings > General > Use proxy server. Desktop: Settings > Privacy & Security, then Manage under Use proxy server. There's no HTTP type, so get SOCKS5 details.

  • Where Viber is blocked

Roskomnadzor blocked Viber in Russia on December 13, 2024. In 2018 the UAE regulator said Viber's call service was never licensed there, and Viber's help still lists the UAE among countries where Viber Out may have connection problems.

  • What your number decides

Viber Out classes a call as domestic or international by the two numbers' country codes, and a proxy doesn't change that. Viber's help also ties some regional features to the country your number is registered in.

Proxy types in Viber's list

Viber lists six types. Geonode supplies SOCKS5, and the other five need a server you control.

NameWorks InAuthBlocking ResistanceBest ForWhere To Get
SOCKS5Viber for Android, iPhone, iPad and desktopUsername and password in their own fieldsLow. The traffic isn't disguised, so a national filter can spot itNetworks that block Viber but don't filter proxiesGeonode residential or ISP proxies
ShadowSocksSame appsUsername, password and an encryption methodMedium. Shadowsocks is an encrypted tunnel built to get past firewallsNetworks that already filter plain SOCKS5Your own VPS running a Shadowsocks server such as shadowsocks-rust. Geonode doesn't sell this type
Cloak or GoQuietSame appsCloak: password, public key, server name, encryption method. GoQuiet: username, password, key, server name, encryption methodHigh. Both make the server look like an ordinary HTTPS site. GoQuiet is rarely maintained, and its author points users to CloakCountries that block Viber outrightA Cloak server you host yourself (github.com/cbeuw/Cloak), placed in front of Shadowsocks
SSH or SSH_SSSame appsSSH: server IP, port, username, password, encryption method. SSH_SS replaces the method with an SS port and SS passwordMediumAnyone who already logs in to a server abroad over SSHAny server you can SSH into (not a Geonode product)

Which proxy type to use with Viber

Pick residential. Viber desktop needs its ports open for UDP as well as TCP, and residential is the Geonode type with a documented UDP option, which calls may need.

Best for Viber

Residential proxies

from $0.27/GB

It can relay UDP once you add a flag to the username, and sticky ports hold one IP for up to 24 hours.

Good for chats

ISP proxies

from $1.25/IP

Each Viber account can keep its own assigned IP, but Geonode's UDP guide doesn't cover ISP proxies, so test a call first.

Workplace firewalls

Datacenter proxies

from $0.14/GB

Its SOCKS5 option can get Viber past an office firewall that closes only Viber's ports.

Testing only

Free public proxies

Free

A free proxy can't read 1-on-1 chats, groups or 1-on-1 calls, which Viber encrypts end to end, but strangers share its IP.

How to set up a proxy in Viber

SOCKS5 in Viber needs an IP address, port, username and password, and the Geonode dashboard lists each proxy as hostname:port:username:password.

  1. Open Viber and tap More, then Settings.

  2. Tap General, then Use proxy server.

  3. Switch Use proxy server to ON.

  4. Select SOCKS5 as the proxy type.

  5. Fill in the IP address, port, username and password.

  6. Tap Back to save.

  7. Restart Viber. On Android, close it fully with General > Exit, then reopen it.

How to check that Viber connects through the proxy

  1. Send a message and watch the icon by its timestamp. If it stays on 'being sent', Viber can't reach its servers through the proxy. 'Sent' means it can. 'Received' can lag while the contact's phone is off.

  2. Forward a photo to My Notes on your phone. Notes sync to every linked device, so if it opens in Viber desktop, both connections work.

  3. Make a short call and check that audio works both ways. If the call is silent while chats work, use the no-sound fix below.

How to turn the proxy off in Viber

  1. On a phone, open Use proxy server again, switch it OFF, tap Back and restart Viber.

  2. On desktop, open Settings > Privacy & Security, switch off Use proxy server and restart Viber.

Common Viber proxy problems and fixes

  • Proxy saved, but Viber still won't connect

    Cause
Viber wasn't restarted after saving, or the SOCKS5 entry has a port from Geonode's HTTP range.
    Fix
Restart Viber, then check the port: use a sticky SOCKS5 port (12000-12010), not 9000-9010 or 10000-10900, which are HTTP. If the IP address field rejects proxy.geonode.io, run nslookup proxy.geonode.io in Command Prompt or Terminal and enter the IP it prints. Repeat the lookup if Viber stops connecting later, because that IP can change.
  • Messages send, but calls have no sound

    Cause
Viber's help doesn't say whether calls use the in-app proxy. If they do, a proxy that passes TCP but not UDP is the first suspect.
    Fix
On Geonode residential, try SOCKS5 port 12000 with -requireUdp-true added to your proxy username, then call again. The login can still succeed without the flag, which makes the mistake easy to miss.
  • Viber desktop never shows the QR code

    Cause
A missing QR screen after installation can mean required ports are closed. Desktop also needs Viber activated on a phone first.
    Fix
Ask the network admin to open the ports in the firewall tab for TCP and UDP. Or link the computer once on a network where Viber works, then add the proxy under Privacy & Security.
  • Activation code doesn't arrive while abroad

    Cause
The code comes by SMS or a Flash Call to your phone number, not through the proxy.
    Fix
Abroad, turn on data roaming until the code arrives. With a Flash Call, a random number rings and you don't need to answer: its last four digits are the code. If no SMS comes, tap Activate via call and answer it to hear the code. Check the country code, which Viber sets from your location. Three wrong codes mean a 24-hour wait.

Viber proxy FAQ

It's a setting in Viber that routes the app through a SOCKS5, ShadowSocks, GoQuiet, Cloak, SSH or SSH_SS server you supply. Phones have it under More > Settings > General and computers under Settings > Privacy & Security.

Click your profile picture at the top left, then Settings > Privacy & Security, and Manage under Use proxy server. Pick a type, fill in the server details, click Accept and restart Viber. The Mac and Linux apps use the same path.

Viber's firewall article lists ports 80, 443, 4244, 5242, 5243 and 7985 for the desktop app, open to all addresses over both TCP and UDP. It names no server addresses to allow.

If a network or country blocks Viber, turn on Use proxy server with a server outside the block. To unblock a contact, tap Unblock in their chat or open More > Settings > Privacy > Block list. A proxy won't help if someone blocked you, since your messages keep the Sent icon and never arrive.

Roskomnadzor has blocked Viber in Russia since December 13, 2024. Viber's help suggests its proxy setting when network restrictions stop the app connecting, and the server has to sit outside Russia. Plain SOCKS5 is quickest to set up, while Cloak makes the traffic look like normal web browsing and is harder to filter.

Look for SOCKS5 with a username and password, since Viber has no HTTP type, plus UDP relay in case calls need it. Use one sticky residential IP per account, in a country where Viber works.

Scan with the phone's default Camera app, try both cameras, or use another QR app. The phone and the computer both need a stable connection, and on a network that blocks Viber the phone's proxy has to be on before you scan.
