Yandex Browser Proxy System Settings, Launch Switches and Extensions

Yandex Browser works on

  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Linux
  • Android
  • iOS

Key facts

  • Turbo mode is gone

Yandex removed Turbo from the settings because it only sped up plain HTTP sites, so guides that mention it are out of date.

  • Background mode keeps extensions on

On Windows, Yandex Browser keeps proxy extensions running in the tray after you close it. To stop that, untick Show the Yandex Browser icon in the tray and allow Yandex Browser to run in the background under Settings > System.

  • Proxy server settings button

Find it under menu > Settings > System > Network. The browser keeps no proxy itself: on Windows the button opens Internet Options (Connections > LAN settings), and on a Mac the browser reads System Settings > Network.

Ways to connect Yandex Browser to a proxy

Pick by whether only Yandex Browser or the whole computer should use the proxy.

Which proxy type to use with Yandex Browser

Residential fits best, because Yandex sets your city from the IP and a residential IP in that city gets local results.

Best for Yandex Browser

Residential proxies

from $0.27/GB

Target a country, state or city, and keep one IP on a sticky port for up to 24 hours during a Yandex ID session.

Good for one account

ISP proxies

from $1.25/IP

An assigned IP stays put while it is in your plan, which suits one account you open daily.

Public pages

Datacenter proxies

from $0.14/GB

Per-GB billing suits open pages where the IP type does not matter.

Setup tests

Free public proxies

Free

Use a free HTTP entry only to test the LAN settings, then remove it and never sign in through it.

How to check that Yandex Browser uses the proxy

  1. Open yandex.com/internet (Yandex Internetometer). Under Technical information, IPv4 address must match the proxy's IP, and Region via IP address should name its city.

  2. The Region line should match the proxy's city too.

  3. If you used the LAN settings or a switch and the IP has not changed, open the page in Incognito (Ctrl+Shift+N), where extensions stay off. If the proxy IP shows only there, a VPN or ad-blocking extension is overriding it. Skip this test with a proxy extension.

How to turn the proxy off in Yandex Browser

  1. Windows: in Settings > System > Proxy server settings > Connections > LAN settings, clear Use a proxy server for your LAN and click OK.

  2. macOS: in System Settings > Network > Details > Proxies, switch off both web proxies and click OK.

  3. Restart from your usual shortcut to drop a switch, and turn an extension off under menu > Extensions. --no-proxy-server skips a system proxy for one session.

Common Yandex Browser proxy problems and fixes

  • "Proxy server error" on every page

    Cause
A proxy is set but does not answer: a typo in the LAN settings, a free proxy that went offline, a network that blocks proxies, or a VPN or ad-blocking extension that changed the settings
    Fix
If you never meant to use a proxy, clear Use a proxy server for your LAN. Otherwise paste the proxy into the Geonode proxy checker, then turn all extensions off and re-enable them one by one.
  • Frigate or another proxy extension was disabled

    Cause
Yandex blocks Frigate, SaveFrom.net and some other extensions as potentially dangerous. On Windows it also disables, at every launch, anything not installed from the Chrome Web Store or Opera add-ons
    Fix
Use a proxy extension from one of those two stores, such as Geonode Proxy Manager, or the system proxy.
  • SOCKS proxy leaks DNS or ignores the login

    Cause
Chromium, the engine under Yandex Browser, reads the Windows Socks box as SOCKS v4: DNS lookups stay on your PC and no login is sent. socks5:// moves DNS to the proxy but sends no password either
    Fix
Clear the Socks box and use the HTTP port with your login. For SOCKS5, whitelist your IP with Geonode and launch with --proxy-server="socks5://proxy.geonode.io:PORT".
  • Yandex Search still shows your home city

    Cause
Yandex also locates you by nearby Wi-Fi access points, and a city set by hand on yandex.com/tune/geo stays in a cookie
    Fix
Turn Automatically identify city back on there, deselect Allow Yandex services to detect location under Settings > System > Personal data settings, and clear the cache.

Yandex Browser proxy FAQ

Open menu > Settings > System > Network > Proxy server settings. On Windows that opens Internet Options, where the proxy sits under Connections > LAN settings.

Launch it with --proxy-server="socks5://HOST:PORT". With socks5://, Chromium always lets the proxy resolve hostnames, so there is no DNS option to switch on. Chromium sends no SOCKS5 login, so whitelist your IP with the provider first.

Yes. Yandex's user help covers proxies under Proxy server error (Connection errors section). The Yandex Browser for organizations docs cover launch switches, Linux environment variables and the ProxySettings policy that locks the proxy.

Yes, for testing. Copy an HTTP proxy from Geonode's free list into the LAN settings, or a SOCKS5 one into --proxy-server. Its owner can read any plain http:// page you load through it.

No. Yandex's help lists no built-in VPN or proxy, and Turbo mode was removed. To change your IP, add your own proxy under Settings > System > Network > Proxy server settings, with a launch switch or through an extension.
