WeChat Proxy Network Proxy Settings and Login Checks

WeChat works on

  • Android
  • iOS
  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Linux

Key facts

  • Where the proxy setting is

Tencent documents a network proxy only for WeChat for Windows, set at login. The Mac and phone apps have no documented option, so the proxy goes into Proxifier (also the Windows fallback) or, on an iPhone, Shadowrocket.

  • Desktop login starts on the phone

WeChat for Windows and Mac needs the phone app for its first login: scan the desktop QR code with the phone and confirm there. A proxy on the computer changes only the computer's IP.

  • Your number decides WeChat or Weixin

An account becomes Weixin only when you link a +86 mainland China mobile number to it, whatever IP or proxy it uses.

Built-in proxy vs proxy client vs VPN

Pick SOCKS5 where you can: Mars, the network library WeChat's mobile team open-sourced, sends its main connection through SOCKS5 but not through a plain HTTP proxy.

Which proxy type to use with WeChat

Tencent checks any login from a new device on a new IP, so pick the type that keeps each account on one address the longest.

Good

Residential proxies

from $0.27/GB

You set the country in the username, and a sticky session holds one residential IP for up to 24 hours before the account moves to a new one.

Best for WeChat

ISP proxies

from $1.25/IP

Your plan lists assigned IPs marked Shared or Dedicated, and a Dedicated IP keeps a WeChat account on one address while that IP stays in your plan.

Office firewalls only

Datacenter proxies

from $0.14/GB

It can get desktop WeChat through a blocked office network, but a rotating port gives a new IP per request, so the account never keeps one address.

Connection test only

Free public proxies

Free

A free proxy is shared and short-lived: fine for testing whether the login window connects, not for an account with WeChat Pay money in it.

How to set up a proxy in WeChat

Copy the account's proxy entry from the Geonode dashboard before WeChat starts on the device.

  1. Download WeChat for Windows from wechat.com or pc.weixin.qq.com and pick the 64-bit 4.x build. The 32-bit build no longer gets updates.

  2. Open WeChat and stop at the login window. Don't scan the QR code yet.

  3. On the login window, look for the network proxy option (Tencent calls it 网络代理) and turn it on. If your version shows none there, close WeChat and route it through Proxifier, as in the Mac tab.

  4. Enter the proxy host and port. An ISP IP has its own port in the dashboard; for residential proxies, 10000 to 10900 is HTTP sticky and 12000 to 12010 is SOCKS5 sticky.

  5. If WeChat asks for a proxy username and password, enter them. Skip this if your IP is whitelisted in the Geonode dashboard.

  6. Confirm the setting, then approve the login from your phone.

How to check that WeChat uses the proxy

  1. Windows: try it on the network that blocks WeChat. If the QR code loads and chats arrive with the proxy on, WeChat is using it.

  2. Phones: with the client on, open the Geonode What is my IP page in a browser the client also routes. It should show the proxy's country.

How to turn the WeChat proxy off

  1. Windows: log out, open the network proxy option you set at login and turn it off.

  2. Proxifier on Windows or Mac: delete the WeChat rule. Phones: switch Proxifier or Shadowrocket off and WeChat goes back to a direct connection.

Common WeChat proxy problems and fixes

  • Login window won't connect with the proxy on

    Cause
The port doesn't match the protocol, or the proxy username and password are missing.
    Fix
Copy the host, port and credentials from the Geonode dashboard again and test them in the Geonode proxy checker. With whitelisting, add the IP your network has today.
  • Security verification keeps coming back

    Cause
The account keeps showing up as a new device on a new IP: a fresh install or second device combined with a rotating port, an expired sticky session or a network switch.
    Fix
Go back to the IP the account first passed verification on and keep it there. A phone that passes verification joins your trusted devices under Me > Settings > Account Security > Manage Devices; leave it there, since a deleted phone has to verify again.
  • Login says operations are too frequent (操作频率过快)

    Cause
You entered the account and password too often in a short time. WeChat also caps the SMS codes one phone number can get per day.
    Fix
Tencent's advice is to update WeChat, log out and back in, then try later or on another network. Don't keep retyping the password in the meantime.
  • Sign-up fails or asks a friend to scan a QR code

    Cause
WeChat asks you to register on a safe, reliable network with any VPN disconnected. Some new accounts also need another user to vouch for them.
    Fix
Register on your usual home or mobile connection with the proxy off and add it afterwards. If nobody can scan for you, tap Verify via Payment Card or Verify and Activate WeChat Pay.

WeChat proxy FAQ

WeChat for Windows does: Tencent added a network proxy option at login in 2017, and Proxifier covers versions that don't show it. On a Mac or phone, route WeChat through a proxy client such as Proxifier or Shadowrocket.

For WeChat alone, a proxy is usually enough: the Windows app's own proxy option or a Proxifier rule moves only WeChat and keeps each account on its own IP, while a VPN moves every app. WeChat's help asks you to disconnect any VPN while you register.

Tencent's help links extra login checks to a new device on a new IP and wants sign-ups done on a safe, reliable network without a VPN. Retry from your usual connection or one fixed proxy IP, then complete the verification WeChat offers.

Yes. For a new-device login, scan the QR code with your previous device, log in with your password or an SMS code, or use a code sent to your linked email. A new account that needs assistance can use a payment card or activate WeChat Pay.

WeChat's Acceptable Use Policy bans automated bots and multiple accounts made for misuse, and Weixin's rules ban multi-login plugins and batch registration, so a proxy doesn't make a bot safe. Each mobile number can register one account, and Me > Settings > Switch Account moves between your own accounts on one phone.
