Epic Games Proxy Launcher Setup and Which Type to Use

Epic Games works on

  • Windows
  • macOS

Key facts

  • Where to set it

Click your profile icon, open Settings and tick Use Proxy. Enter an HTTP proxy as IP:PORT, then restart the launcher.

  • Game traffic

Fortnite, Rocket League and other multiplayer games send match traffic over UDP and have no proxy setting. The launcher proxy won't change your ping or which game server you get.

  • Account country

Store prices follow the country on your Epic account as well as your IP. Epic lets you change that country once every 6 months and asks you to turn off any VPN or hosting service before you do.

  • Purchase risk

Epic may refuse a purchase when your IP, account country and card country don't match. Turn the proxy off before you pay.

Which proxy settings the Epic Games Launcher accepts

The launcher passes the proxy to libcurl. An Epic staff reply on the Unreal Engine forums says it supports HTTP and HTTPS proxies.

Which proxy type to use with Epic Games

Epic runs fraud checks at sign-in and checkout. Use an IP that looks like a home connection and keep it the same between sessions.

Good with sticky sessions

Residential proxies

from $0.27/GB

Residential IPs pass Epic's checks. A rotating session can change the IP mid-download and force a new sign-in, so use a sticky session of up to 24 hours.

Best for Epic Games

ISP proxies

from $1.25/IP

You get one fixed IP registered to an internet provider. The launcher signs in from the same address every day, and you only whitelist once.

Works for Store browsing

Datacenter proxies

from $0.14/GB

Fine for loading Store pages. Fraud checks flag datacenter ranges first at sign-in and checkout.

Testing only

Free public proxies

Public HTTP proxies are shared and usually die within hours. Never type your Epic password through one.

How to set up a proxy in the Epic Games Launcher

Use Proxy is part of the launcher on Windows and macOS. Have an HTTP proxy address and port ready before you start.

  1. The Use Proxy field has no separate username and password boxes. In your Geonode dashboard, add your public IP to the IP whitelist, then copy the proxy address and port.

  2. Open the Epic Games Launcher and click your profile icon in the top-right corner.

  3. Click Settings.

  4. Scroll down and tick Use Proxy.

  5. Enter the proxy in IP:PORT format, for example 192.0.2.50:8080.

  6. Restart the launcher and sign in again.

How to check that the proxy works

  1. Restart the launcher with Use Proxy on. If it signs in and the Store loads, the proxy accepts your whitelisted IP.

  2. Change the port in Use Proxy to a wrong number and restart. If the launcher still loads, it is not using the proxy setting.

  3. Put the correct port back. Then open What is my IP in a browser set to the same proxy and check that it shows the proxy's IP, not yours.

How to turn the proxy off

  1. Open Settings in the launcher, untick Use Proxy and restart the launcher.

  2. If you whitelisted your home IP only for Epic, remove it from the IP whitelist in your Geonode dashboard.

Common Epic Games proxy problems and fixes

  • Launcher can't sign in or connect after you tick Use Proxy

    Cause
The proxy asks for a username and password that your IP:PORT entry doesn't include, or your home IP changed after you whitelisted it
    Fix
Whitelist your current public IP in the Geonode dashboard, then restart the launcher. Test the address and port first in the Geonode proxy checker.
  • WR-0001 No Response right after the launcher starts

    Cause
A SOCKS5 address in Use Proxy. The launcher is built for HTTP and HTTPS proxies
    Fix
Replace it with the HTTP port of the same proxy and restart.
  • Checkout fails, or the item is not available in your region

    Cause
A country mismatch between the proxy and your account or card (see Purchase risk above)
    Fix
Untick Use Proxy, restart the launcher and try the checkout again.
  • Downloads are slow or stall at 0 B/s

    Cause
All game files now go through the proxy, which adds a hop. A download speed limit in the launcher can also cause it
    Fix
Untick Use Proxy for large installs and patches, and check that no download speed limit is set in the launcher Settings.

Epic Games proxy FAQ

It's an HTTP proxy the Epic Games Launcher connects through. Epic sees the proxy's IP instead of yours for sign-in, the Store and downloads. The games themselves still connect directly.

Open the launcher, click your profile icon, go to Settings, tick Use Proxy and enter the proxy as IP:PORT, then restart. There are no username and password boxes, so whitelist your IP with the proxy provider first.

Yes. Use Proxy sits in the launcher Settings on Windows and macOS. It takes an HTTP proxy address and port.

The Geonode free proxy list has HTTP proxies you can use to test the Use Proxy setting. Don't sign in with your Epic password through a public proxy, because its operator can see and log your traffic.

Usually it's a download speed limit in the launcher Settings or a proxy in Use Proxy. Remove the limit, untick Use Proxy for big installs and restart the download.

An ISP proxy with a fixed IP, or a residential proxy on a sticky session. Epic's fraud checks treat both as home connections, and the IP stays the same while you're signed in.
